Cognate with Ifè àgùɖã̀, Igala àgwùtọ̀, Itsekiri àgùtàn, Olukumi àgùntàn. Compare Igbo atụlū and possibly Edo óhuán. Proposed to be derived from Proto-Yoruba *à-gʊ̀tã̀, from Proto-Edekiri *à-gʊ̀tã̀, ultimately from Proto-Yoruboid *à-gʷʊ̀tã̀
